WRS Livestock Scanning Services

Pregnancy Testing of Cattle

Using ultrasound scanning technology is a proven, stress-free and accurate method of determining whether cows are pregnant, and if so, how many calves they are carrying, and when they are due.

The optimal time to scan cows with a rectal lance is day 42 to day 95 of pregnancy. This is because the pregnancy is still generally above the pelvis and can be seen without having to push the lance right inside the cow, and so is less stressful for the cow.

We will time our visit according to the diagnostic option you have chosen. For example, if you want to diagnose cycles or twins we will want to come around 42 days after the bull has been withdrawn, however if you want to only diagnose wet/dries, then we can come later.

What We Bring

We bring all of the equipment required to do the scanning:

  • An invertor generator to provide our own power, so we can set up our equipment anywhere on your property (you may wish us to scan different mobs in different locations).
  • A back pack scanner and goggles that enable us to read the results as we move down the race.

What You Need to Provide

You will need to provide enough staff to:

  • Bring in the cows to be scanned and keep them flowing through the race.
  • Mark each cow (as required) after it is scanned.

In our experience 1-2 staff is generally enough.

You will also need to provide spray or chalk for marking the scanned cows.

Available Diagnostic Options

You can choose one of the following diagnoses:

  • Wet/dry only.
  • Lates, cycles or twins.
  • Individual calving dates.
